Editable Text doesn't flag as needing save

Something I just noticed in my Notepad module: editing the text in an editable text field doesn't flag the module as needing saving to VM. For instance, in a patch, when I edit text in Notepad, then hit Ctrl-S to save, VM ignores the request. I can think of an obvious fix, like adding a hidden control that changes when text is edited. That would work, but it feels awfully kludgeish. Is there some way in the system to effect this naturally?
