physical modelin???

Post by lovehaha18 »

Why hasn't there been a physical modeling module yet? AAS company has a separate modeling module https://www.applied-acoustics.com/multiphonics-cv-2/, please speed up. I don't want to buy another company's modular software.

I had a quick rummage through the site. I couldn't find any specific physical modelling modules on there. Could you point me to the specific module that you're referring to?

There are several Karplus-Strong modules in the VM ecosystem, two of which are free of charge.

The Zeit Voltage-Controlled Delay can be configured as a Volts / Octave waveguide to implement 'classic' PM patches. (Full disclosure: Zeit is NOT free-of-charge and I am the developer. There is however a free 28-day demo period to see if it fits your needs.)

OBJEQ is the physical building block.

I also took a quick poke around to look for the physical modelling module. The word "OBJEQ" took my eye and I guessed this was where I had to look, so I read the manual. It's an interesting module and I can see the attraction. Would I base my choice of modular ecosystem based on that one filter module, though...?

To be fair, AAS are known for their physical modelling, and this filter appears pretty much what already exists within their Objeq delay (which I own and like), so the development leap to the module probably wasn't huge. This isn't something that I've tried to do within VM, mainly as I use the incredibly well-priced Substantia from Giorgio Sancristoforo. This does require some learning and it's not a VST, so the audio has to be routed in - I use Reaper, so that's pretty easy and from there I feed it into VM, if needed.

My point...? I don't know how serious you were with your point and, if a physical modelling filter is totally pivotal to what you want to achieve, then you may be better considering the AAS ecosystem. The VM world does include a LOT of incredible modules that can bent to your will with some ingenuity (for example the Scanned Oscillator from Weevil), or you could just feed in audio from a 15 euro standalone item.

The Rackmode String Filter might be a suitable replacement for ObjEQ. It's uncanny how much it can trick the ear into hearing 'acoustic fingerprints', even with a simple sawtooth VCO as source.

This should cover what you want, and possibly with more versatility.

Mark has spoken, so the word is given. I'd also point out that there are lots of modules in VM-Land that use physical modeling in one way or another. Weevil has a couple, Vult has some, and I believe R_Ware or one of its collaborations just released something in the Karpus-Strong range. Likewise, you won't go wrong with Mark Barton's stuff, or Dome's, either. I know there's at least one KP module that's been out there for a long time; BCI, I think. Right now I'm not where I can check on this stuff. But just because a module doesn't have "Physical Modeling" blazoned all over it doesn't mean it's not doing some.

If anyone is looking for Chromaphone from AAS, it's currently £59.95 at Plugin Boutique, which seems like a decent price compared to the list price from AAS themselves.
