Dragging patters to a Track in Reaper

I might be doing something stupid, but when I drag a pattern onto a track in Reaper, I can see the MIDI information but not all the instruments are playing. For instance, there will only be the hihat but no bass or snare. Also playing the notes defined in the user manual doesn't give the expected sounds. Often no sound at all. I've got Host Sync switched to off. I also see the cancel buttons flashing as the track is playing. Any ideas?
