You could also do this with some sort of MIDI processor. I used to do it in my hardware stack with a Yamaha MEP-4. Thing's still sitting over there in my rack, staring at me. I'd bet there's some module, maybe one of Waverly's, that could take your melodic line and generate duplicate notes, but delayed and pitch-shifted. The MEP-4 could, and it was no great shakes as these things went.

I've finally had a chance to play with it. I quickly duplicated the entire row by right-clicking the empty space. I then turned the dials for the pitches on the oscillators up to seven. Next, I just set up a stereo mixer and reduced the volume of the second row a little. Finally, it sounded neat with the EnvGen attack set a little higher. I should get a poly trigger delay, eventually. This thing was fun to play with and easy to set up. Every piano key gives me a lot to hear. Cool stuff.

I threw a delay effect of 200 onto each synth and used an arpeggiator from my piano with them going across three octaves. The sound was beautiful.

Another idea to throw into the pot...

You can use the stock delay module to delay CV just as well as audio, so you could for instance use just one envelope generator and send its output though a delay module (set 100% wet, 0% feedback) to generate a delayed contour to control a second VCA. Obviously you could extend this idea and build a chain.
