Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
Does anyone have a working emulation of the cherry matrix switch used on the Arp 2500.
I have the modules but I thought it would be cool to have the passive functionality of the matrix.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
No-one has produced the switching matrix of the 2500. It seems like a step too far towards authenticity for my purposes. Quicker just to patch like a Moog 900.
However, Pooh Bear released a series of blank panels which look like the 2500 switching matrices.

Re: Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
Mmmmh... Each module had an internal patching with the switching matrix, that's meaning one switching matrix "module" for each VM2500 module ; so we'll need a large and tall screen !
The system is well explained by Rolf, especialy with VM2500 of CA, parts 9 to 12, and the matrix system patching, at

I posted a link referred to the ARP2500's use by Eliane Radigue

Your question interests me, and I think a patch could be made using switching modules. I'll have a look.

You can use Cable Buses as an alternative to patch cables in VM. This is quite a bit closer in concept to the ARP 2500 switching matrix concept. It also tidies up a lot of clutter from the front panel in a similar fashion:

Re: Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
These decorative panels gave me the idea. The G2500 looks cool, but I do not think it is a VST.
Thanks for the alternative work around. I have not gotten too into this yet. The Arp 2600 is as close to modular as I have gotten in real life.
I would like to have a psuedo working 2500 just for the fun of it. Even if the panels had patch points it would be cool. I thought about a switching matrix, but the sliders get me
Jean - let me know if you get something. I have looked into programming a matrix mod with sliders, but there isn't much info. It must be too basic. I saw nothing in the developer's tutorials on matrix programming
The 2500 is the only ARP I never got to play with in my youth. I hear the matrixes were noisy and crosstalked, which is unheard of now, but it would be interesting. I have no idea how crosstalk would be modeled, but several of my mixer plugins do it ...
Jean I am reading the link you passed along this week. I love a good synth history. Thanks
Thanks again,
Barry

Re: Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
Doing slider matrices wouldn't be that hard to do in VMD. Just a module full of vertical sliders with fixed resolution, then something like a two-dimensional connectivity array to associate the slider positions with inputs and outputs. You could probably clean it up some using associative elements like maps. It would be a mess of code, though, because of all the sliders you'd have to handle notifications for.
Personally, I don't see the point, when there's already something present that works better. Believe me, if you'd actually worked with one of the early modular units, you'd be pretty happy not to have to deal with the workarounds they used in the name of automation. The one modular I actually had my hands on was one of Vladimir Ussachevsky's custom modulars at his lab at the U of U Music Dept. Hey, while we're at it, why not do like we did and emulate envelope generators by paring down reel-to-reel audio tape? Loads of fun...not!

if you're ok with attenuverter cells/knobs instead of pins/switches there's this:

Andrew Macaulay has a few switching devices. This one, like the R-Ware MixMatrix, would give you hours of switching pleasure

Re: Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
The developer of G2500 was completely against turning it into a plug-in. It's a real shame, as he'd obviously created the software as a labour of love. I downloaded the demo, but found it very clunky to work with and the amount of screen real-estate it occupied was insane!LilhossBigJake wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2024 9:58 pm The G2500 looks cool, but I do not think it is a VST.
When I was looking for a software modular (to replace my Nord Micro Modulars), VCV Rack wasn't available as a plug-in, either. That made the choice of CA Voltage Modular a no-brainer. MRB's VM2500 was the icing on the cake, and was in fact the very first product I bought from the VM store. I was using VM2500 with VM Nucleus for six months before buying any other modules. I then bought VM900 and it was yet another month before I treated myself to VM Core. My library currently stands at 540 modules, but even that's chickenfeed compared to some people that I know!

Re: Arp 2500 cherry matrix switch
It's a bit of a cheat, but here's a sort of "polyphonic 2500" that I assembled using six VM2500 synth voice modules. Thanks to Cherry's Remote Control module, I've got global control over velocity to volume (orange), waveform selection (yellow), filter cutoff & resonance (red), as well as VCA attack & release times (pink). Also added an effects section. Next steps are to add pwm and a global LFO for vibrato. I've realized that if i reduce the polyphony to four, I can get more mileage out of each Remote Control (two 'global' parameters per unit instead of just one). I might take it further by using a couple of the matrix switches discussed in this topic to implement a more semi-modular setup.
