A lot of ambient modular music i like seems to have people using a module called rings from mutable intstruments. I'm still trying out lots of different voices in VM, but I wondered if there was a clear pathway toward that kind of sound in voltage modular.. i don't know really how to describe it, really ethereal, clear bell-like, sweet, floating, strings.... Does this sound start with FM synthesis? If I understand right the mutable instruments 'rings' is mostly a resonator?
It's just a matter of taste, but for me, I've been trying to get away from the machine sounds, the sawtooths and bleeps.. sometimes i find a sound i love by happy accident, usually with some harmonics that come from somewhere and a delay..but I'd sure like to create them more intentionally...

Rings is a physical modelling device. It uses impulses to trigger a signal path that has controlled feedback to create pitches resonances.
Here are a couple of VM modules to get you started on that path...

You can also explore building your own. Here's a link to a fantastic programming guide for the original Nord Modular system. There's a whole chapter on Physical Modelling, and many of the examples can be adapted to VM.

You can also go the VST route, with AAS's excellent physical modelling synths. Chromaphone is a blast and it sounds fantastic. String Studio is more for strings, obviously. They're both on sale for half price.

Another slightly cheaper VST option is Modelonia from Nusofting.

a while ago I learned that thee excellent Laboratory Filter https://store.cherryaudio.com/modules/laboratory-vcf is capabale of this.
to be honest, I have not dipped too deep into the matter but here is the forum post by MRB, which includes a preset as well.
