Over the past couple of years I have gotten into exploring using VM as a plug-in host. In fact I have 2 extremely basic VM patches from mid-2022 where I tried hosting Cardinal inside VM. I just took a quick look. I got as far as mapping some CCs in the VM Plug-in Host to some parameters in a Cardinal tutorial patch nothing with either the transport (start, stop, continue) or clock/timing/sync.

It looks like I used Cardinal's Host MIDI, Host Audio, and Host MIDI CC modules though I'd have to spend some time trying to reconstruct what I was doing and why. By using VM's host module is certainly is possible to send stuff. I didn't try sending anything from Cardinal to VM. Not even sure it has modules to do that.

Anyhow, I'd be interested in hearing of your progress and successes getting VCV Rack and VM to cooperate with each other.

If I figure something out I will post it here. I haven't actually tried using it in Ableton or Reaper but this is a vst so it should have at least SOME 2 way communication - but most essentially clock.

I sometimes run VM inside VM so have an idea of what information you can pass to VM when it's running as a VST plugin.

The following screenshot shows some connections in action...

As you can hopefully see the plugin automatically syncs with the host but one can also send clock via one of the audio channels.

One problem I did find is that although pitch info is transmitted by MIDI to the pitch socket and the trigger output looks fine too, the gate signal is mysteriously stuck high. The gate signal is however correct when one retrieves it via a MIDI to CV module.

So when VM is being run as a VST plugin it can receive plenty of info from a host. It also works in the other direction, sending stuff back to the host.

Very Interesting! Thanks Colin, I will try this later if I have time. Unfortunately our city is under an evacuation notice due to wild fires so I may have to put this off for a bit. ;)
