Just wondering if anybody has experienced this module 'Blackout' situation?
The yellow text at bottom left says: 'Downloading Images' then 'Syncing with Server', but this is the way it stays - no change.

Nope, never seen anything like that. And I use VM for hours every day and even with patchy internet connections I've not encountered such a situation.
Has it fixed itself on a reboot?
If not take a look at the log file which you can find via Settings | General | Show Log Folder. It's just a text file so you can click on it to see what's going on.
If you can't fix it yourself you'll need to email the log file to CA support.
